The John Sherman Hoyt Scout Reservation is located on 170 acres of pristine forest and fields in West Redding, Connecticut. This is primarily a tent camping facility, and trails circumscribe the camp which provide for rigorous hikes and up close encounters with myriad wild creatures and native trees and plants. Troop 431 will be camping from Friday, September 22nd till Sunday, September 24th. We have numerous activities planned including lighting campfires, playing games, teaching skills, backcountry cooking, setting up bearbags, and many more.
We welcome you to join us: camp with us, or if time does not permit, join us for part of the day (Saturday, September 23rd). Please contact our Scoutmaster Josh Rogers ([email protected]) for more details and directions. We headed out of town after school on Friday, ate dinner along the way, and had our campsite setup at Nickerson State Park by quarter after ten. The next morning the boys cooked breakfast, cleaned up and we were on our way, picking up bike rentals and taking to the rail trail for the ten-mile ride to Cape Cod National Seashore. The cool breeze greeting us at the shore felt fantastic after the ride and we enjoyed the sand, surf and seals for a good while until the boys got hungry for lunch. After a meal at the Lobster Shanty, we biked the trail back to our starting point, returned the bikes and snuck in a little pre-dinner ice cream from Hot Chocolate Sparrow. Back at the campground, we wound down the daylight at a beautiful beach on glacially formed Flax Pond, complete with freshwater mussels. Dinner and sitting around the campfire finished off a great day. We were back in Ridgefield by one-thirty on Sunday.
